It is not a secret that we are living in a world of rapid changes. The world we live in today is not the same as it was 30 years ago, or even 10 years ago. We are constantly bombarded with new technologies and tools that make our lives easier and change how we work and live.
This leads to the constant development of skill sets and knowledge which is necessary for professional success. However, some believe this need for learning makes everything more difficult than ever. They say that if you want to be successful, you need to master one skill or one profession and then stick with it for your entire life
It's not easy to master the skills. Many factors affect the outcome. But, there are a few things that you can do to make it easier for yourself.
First, you need to decide about the skill itself and understand what it takes to master it. The more you know about the skill, the better prepared you will be for learning it. we need to be aware of the skills that we want to master. For example, if you want to master the skill of playing guitar, then you need to be mindful of what exactly you want to learn and how you can go about it.
Second, find the level of your skill. Before learning any type of skill it is essential to know your status. Knowing where you stand helps you to know and remember your goals clearly. If you already know the skill somewhat then find the weakest part and start to work on that.
The third thing is finding a mentor who has mastered the skill or has learned something similar before. You can get a lot of information from them and they can also help you with your progress and give feedback on your work as well as provide support when needed.
The fourth thing is finding an example of how this skill should be used in practice and then trying to replicate it as closely as possible while building on what they have done
Fifth, make a small piece of skills you want to learn.
Sixth, you should have a good strategy for mastering that skill. For example, if you want to learn how to play guitar by watching videos and practicing on your own at home, then it is essential that you have a plan in place for what videos and practices you will do each day.
Seventh, you should have a way of tracking our progress in order to see how much progress has been made toward mastering the skill.
Let’s learn all these steps in detail to master any skill. The following instructions give you detailed ideas of how you can master any skill on your own.
Decide the skill you want to learn
It is always important for you to know which skill you want to learn. Starting without knowing your wants will be like going on a forest trek without a forest map. It is a roadmap for your success.
Before learning a skill you need to get clear about what skill you want to learn and what the subskill attached to it which is necessary for you to learn.
For example, if you want to learn to code, you need to know which programming language you will learn, and what you want to build or develop with that specific language. This step was always necessary and always will be.
It's daunting, the idea of building this list of skills you want to learn. There are so many possibilities, and it might be a little bit hard to know what skills you’re interested in, or which ones would be most valuable. But how can you make that decision?
When you want to get ahead in your career, the best way to do it is to learn new skills. However, with so many different skills out there, it can be tough to decide which ones to learn. That’s why it’s important to focus on skills that will help you in your career.
Think about what your current job (or most recent job) is like and how it differs from your ideal job. What skills could you use from your current job that would be helpful in your ideal job? What other skills would you need to learn?
Think about the most remarkable people you’ve met or the most impressive projects you’ve seen. What were those people doing differently than everyone else? Which skills did they have that set them apart from others? What talents (or personality traits) might have contributed to their success?
What are you interested in learning more about but not currently well-versed in, or even just not interested in at all? Do you have an interest in photography but feel like it’s way over your head? There is a lot of information online on how to pick up photography. But how about having someone teach you?
What are your hobbies, interests, or activities? Does that list of hobbies or interests seem interesting to you from someone else’s perspective? Do you feel like those things hold a lot of potential to make you happier and more valuable, or do they seem pretty dull to you? Do they inspire you or interest you, or not really?
What are your skills right now that are holding you back from being more valuable at work, doing something more fulfilling that makes a significant impact on the world, or even just landing a new job in your ideal field? What do they look like when held up against the skills others have who are better than you at them?
Deciding which skill you want to learn is the easiest part of the process of mastering skills
If you have identified which skills you want to learn then let's go to the next step, find your level of skill.
Find your level of skill
One of the best ways to improve your skills is to find out where you stand. You can do this by taking some tests or quizzes. Once you know your level, it will be easier for you to find resources and tutorials that are tailored to you.
When you start out in any new activity, it’s often difficult to judge how good you are. This is especially true of activities that rely on subjective judgments, such as musical ability, sporting prowess, or artistic talent. It can be hard to know where to start and, more importantly, where you should aim to get to.
Lots of processes are out there to find the level of your skills and I suggest you go and find out the best method that suits your needs. In the journey of learning a new skill, it is crucial to know the level, it helps you to challenge yourself.
One way of getting a sense of your level of skill is to compare yourself to others. This can be done informally, by talking to people who are already good at the activity in question, or formally by taking tests or entering competitions.
Tons of people are out there randomly roaming in the process of learning new skills, they never tried to find their level so they are just roaming around.
There are different types of skill assessments. Some focus on measuring your ability in a specific area, while others measure your overall competence. No matter what type of assessment you take, it is important, to be honest with yourself about your results. Only by understanding your starting point can you make progress toward your goals.
For example, you have decided to learn a programming language, and you can start by solving some problems if you are familiar with the syntax of the language and you know some of it then you have found your level. You can start from that and continue to practice every day until you succeed.
If you don't know where you stand and don't have the right step to move forward then nobody can help you to move forward. Mentors will show you the right step but you should find your place.
One of the best ways to know the level every time you learn a new skill is to keep a skill journal. In this journal, you will write down everything you did to acquire those skills. Finding your level or testing yourself is as important as learning the skill.
It is a self-assessment to test your knowledge and skills. I suggest you test your level before starting to learn any skills that motivate you to work on yourself.
Now you have found your skills level let's go to the next step and next step is to find the right mentor.
Find the right mentor
There are many ways you can learn and master a skill. One of the best ways I find is to have a mentor. Mentors have mastered the skills you want to learn and will help you get there faster.
A mentor is a person who provides guidance to another person through experience and qualification. A person must engage with mentors to gain most of the advice from them.
Your success depends on the mentors you have. Mentors are like guides on a road called life. It was never an easy task and never will be to find a mentor. Mentors can provide specific tactics and strategies to learn or master skills that you want to learn. Mentors always encourage you to grow your skills.
If you lack knowledge and information about the skill you want to learn then mentors are the banks of knowledge. They have gained knowledge from experience and hard work.
They always challenge you to set audacious goals and help you to achieve them. So whether you want to learn programming or any soft or hard skill a mentor is necessary. When learning skills accountability with yourself is the most important aspect than the time of practice.
To gain the most out of a mentor one should always engage with their mentor. Mentors help encourage you to reach your audacious goals. Their encouragement increases motivation to keep your progress.
Mentors provide you with real feedback, if you don't have a mentor then your mind will always try to make things easier even if it is not, but mentors always tell you where you are right and when you were wrong. They are the feedback system in the process of mastering your skills.
You might have read somewhere, that the famous businessman Steve Jobs also had lots of mentors helping him to solve the problem in his business. Steve’s mentors were like a feedback system to Steve. They would always remind him of his mistakes and taught him how to learn from their mistakes.
With the example of Steve Jobs, I mean to say that a person is never out of mentor. You need to learn from everything around you.
Nature is the best mentor if you are preparing to learn politics or business. Water is the mentor or example of regular practice or what we call consistency. Mountains are an example of stillness or patience. Mastering skills takes time, a lot of time and mountains can teach you that.
I gave this nature example to make it clear that a mentor can be anything, it can be a book, someone’s story, or your pain, anything can be a mentor but you need to find yourself. If you have the right mentor and the right mindset with you nobody can stop you from becoming successful.
Before finding a mentor you need to look into certain qualities of a mentor before working with them.
A mentor should be able to give you constructive feedback and they should be nonjudgmental. If a mentor cannot tell your mistakes then he cannot be the mentor at all.
There are other ways to find mentors that work for different types of skills:
- Find someone in the field who has mastered the skill and ask them for advice or guidance on how to improve
- Find someone in your field who is at a similar level as you and ask them for advice on how to improve your skills
- Look up videos, articles, or books about how experts do their work
Now you have a mentor who is willing to help you in any circumstance then let's move into another step.
Have a strategy ready for learning
Now you have found the right mentor to guide you to achieve what you always wanted. It is time for you to make some strategies so that in hard times you can easily solve the problem.
Learning is like a battle for yourself, lots of distractions always keep you away from what you want to achieve.
Most people don't create a strategy when they are learning new skills, and they quit so fast and fail. We are living in an age where we can access information that was luxurious for kings and queens in the medieval period.
We can access anything with just a search. And this is where we fail. With easy access to the information, we don't know how to start or move forward and we quit easily.
We don't know the value of the skill we want to learn. If there is a life and death condition for you not learning a skill then you would surely learn, I mean you would master that skill.
So our main driving factor is fear or something else like love. And we should be able to create that driving force on our own. We need a strategy on how to practice some moves or some techniques otherwise we might break our body parts or ruin something.
So how do you make strategies to master any type of skill?
The answer to this question lies in yourself.
Some people prefer to learn through practice, some would like to follow the text or instruction and some are quite good with sound.
Based on this system we have to make a strategy. So the first strategy is to find which type of person you are. You can find that easily yourself or you can get help from your mentor.
So let’s learn how you can make your own strategies to master your skill. So the first step is to perform research. Find out the best method of learning for yourself. You can get ideas from books, talks, podcasts, or webinars.
Once you find out what is the best method or practice that lots of people are following then try to learn with that method. Test yourself with a new method for some weeks if it doesn’t work don't hesitate to change the learning method.
If you look into successful athletes like Michel Phillips, Ronaldo, and Messi then we can find one thing common in all the athletes or people who are top in their field. They all have morning rituals for their skills. So another strategy is to make a morning ritual to learn skills.
I mean you have a high performance in the morning so why not utilize the mastering skill instead of scrolling reels?
If you might find that following a strategy is hard then you are not wrong. It is hard to follow a strategy or plan for learning skills. Our minds always try to find shortcuts and do not prefer to work on unattractive work. So always try to make, learning fun work.
Track your progress
Your progress is the most valuable data you can track while learning any type of skill. Tracking progress may be some fancy thing to you but I promise you it works. It worked for me. Tracking progress is like testing yourself. If you are preparing for an exam or stage performance then it is crucial to test yourself multiple times.
When you are trekking in a large forest you frequently check your maps and compass. It is like that our mind is like a sea. If you pour some weight of sand once in a while it doesn't make any impact but if you regularly put weight on the sea then it will rise. It is the same in the process of learning skills.
It is crucial to check yourself. If possible track your daily progress if not at least try to track your weekly progress. Our progress makes an impact on the neural pattern of our brain.
Find the best way to track your progress and discuss it with your mentor. Ask your mentor to facilitate based on your progress. While tracking always try to make the tracking system simple and easy. Start with the basic categories of data whether it may be homework completion rate, practice hour, or test score. These data categories will guide you on where to go next. Data always show the way in times of complexity.
